Dietary supplement capsule containing live flora and D-mannose.
The microscopic organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea) living in our bodies are in a complex and multifaceted interaction with our bodies. Our knowledge of the composition and role of the microbiome (the totality of microorganisms living with us) dates back barely 20 years. Molecular genetic studies have revealed the diversity and versatile role of the microbiome in maintaining the internal environment. Our body is home to at least a thousand types of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and archaea. Furthermore, they are not merely "passive" inhabitants of our bodies, but we are in a multifaceted and complex metabolic relationship with them. Health is unimaginable without a microbiome of adequate quantity and composition. It is divided into five main areas: oral, respiratory, gut, vaginal, and skin microbiome.
The largest amount of microbiome in our body is found in the intestines, with the colon being the most densely populated area, where a minimum of 500 species, numbering trillions of individuals, live in a single gram of intestinal content.
Our intestinal system, as an external environment, directly encounters numerous pollutants that can cause significant damage, which is why 70% of our immune cells are located in the intestinal walls, receiving strong support from the gut flora.
The microbiome is divided into two major groups: beneficial (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, etc.) and harmful bacteria (Salmonella, Helicobacter pylori, E.coli, etc.).
The metabolic products of beneficial bacteria prevent pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella, Helicobacter pylori, E.coli, Streptococcus, etc.) from attaching and proliferating on the intestinal wall and in the intestinal contents. Animal studies have shown that Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria reduce intestinal inflammation by producing their own anti-inflammatory substances.
Numerous animal studies have indicated a potential correlation between a deteriorating gut flora and unwarranted weight gain. Factors that disrupt our health and bodily functions (diseases, antibiotics, chemicals, chemo and radiation therapy, low-nutrient, artificially produced foods) can significantly impair the composition and quality of the microbiome. Unfavorable changes in the microbiome can have consequences not only for the intestinal system but can also affect the entire body. The risk of obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, insulin resistance, diabetes, thyroid, polyarticular and circulatory diseases, psoriasis, eczema may increase, as well as the risk of various cancerous diseases.
A well-chosen diet, rich in adequate amounts of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and cereals, along with carefully consumed probiotic and prebiotic preparations, can potentially maintain microbial balance in our body in the long term. Consequently, functional disorders in the body can be prevented, and several of the diseases listed above may be avoided. A balanced gut microbiome, also supplied with prebiotics, has been proven to reduce appetite and help create a healthy feeling of fullness. It can help break down fats, thereby hindering their absorption and reducing blood cholesterol levels. Animal studies have shown that Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria can reduce intestinal inflammation by producing their own anti-inflammatory substances. Furthermore, they may also have pain-relieving effects through cannabinoid receptors. Human studies also appear to confirm that Lactobacillus gasseri can inhibit the accumulation of visceral fat and the growth of fat cells. It can alleviate gastrointestinal inflammation.
S. boulardii is used as a probiotic to introduce beneficial microbes into the small and large intestines and to provide protection against pathogens.
